According to the teachers here, this small tabulating device is known as the soroban or the suan pan in Chinese.

It is found sometime between 300 B.C. and 900 - 1000 A.D., with sightings about rocks organized on top of a slab of wood or platform.

People in the past would then move these rocks to represent the different values of these numbers.

Till today, very little to no modification is done to the soroban except now that it is made with little discs strung onto rods.

Just like the stones in the past, all these little beads have values to them.

In the calculating frame, we can see that there are four beads on the lower bar and one single bead on the upper bar.

The four beads below represent values such as one, two, three, and four while the bead above represents five.

To active or move the disc, students or users have to slide them either upwards or downwards.

To use the soroban to calculate, you can move the beads.

For instance, moving one lower bead will mean one.

Since there are four beads, you can have values from one to four. Five is the bead above. To get six to nine, users will have to combine both the five with the four beads below.

In columns, the numbers are in tens.

You will be able to get twenty, thirty, forty, fifty, sixty, seventy, eighty, and ninety.
