In a typical soroban, the soroban has an approximate number of ten to fifteen columns in the calculating frame.
In these columns, each bar contains and holds about four plus one beads, which are also known as units.
The upper beads holds the value of five while the lower units are worth one. While students are counting with the soroban, they are taught to first move the lower units.
When the value of fives are reached, the lower ones will be reset.
This cycle will be repeated as the number and beads increase in value.
Did you know that each bead in different columns is worth 10^(n-1).
Depending on the column, different values and units can mean different things.
For instance, the first column is one, and the second is in tens, etc. In a soroban that has thirteen columns, the soroban’s calculating capacity can be counted up to ten trillion.
